TPT had this to say
The Pineapple Thief are very pleased to invite Warmrain to open their London show.
Warmrain, whose album Absent Friends is out mid October, have a quintessentially English feel, managing to sound of their time whilst remaining faithful to the traditions laid down before them by the great English rock bands of the past. Having achieved success at this year’s High Voltage festival, their infectious riffs and memorable melodies will be a great way to start off the show. Doors will open a little earlier now so make sure you get there on time. Don’t miss Warmrain!
More about Warmrain’s debut release
Over the course of these four songs the band take you on a journey through the wide spectrum of their musical character, covering their classic rock sound, their mellower electro acoustic songs and one of their acoustic compositions.
The title track- ‘Absent friends’ is a deeply moving documentation of the thoughts and feelings associated with the loss of a loved one. This song shows the bands sensitive and controlled approach to their music build into a powerful and hypnotic classic rock groove - this is genuinely a song you can fall in love with and want to hear over and over again
When the sub conscious mind releases the shackles of the conscious mind and allows the spirit to soar ‘Flying dreams’ can occur. With this song the band create the feeling of open space and peaceful solitude, building into a soulful and uplifting finale.
After the opening two tracks have both shown the band taking their time to allow the music to build ‘Good to belong’ is a beautiful song about contentment and gratitude which is all but two and a half minutes long- yet again showing another side to the multi faceted character of the band.
‘Run to the sun’ finishes proceedings off perfectly by winding things down with a mellow acoustic number about friendship.
This is music written from the heart and put together in a natural and intelligent way. If you like your music to have real substance and emotional content then you should buy yourself a copy of ‘Absent friends’ by WARMRAIN- you will not be disappointed.
WarmRain (the brainchild of singer songwriter Leon J Russell) have a quintessentially English feel, managing to sound of their time - whilst remaining faithful to the traditions laid down before them, by the great English rock bands of the past. They play very naturally structured rock music, made up of a blend of really infectious and memorable melodies and riffs, which (as all good music should do) once its worked its way into your psyche, both enriches the listeners life and, by putting into words and music things we’ve also felt or thought, gives the listener something they can relate to and so, also makes them feel they’re not alone.
Since first discovering the music of the great English rock bands of the late sixties and early seventies Leon has always been inspired by the idea of writing concept albums. Albums such as Quadrophenia, Tommy, Dark side of the moon and The Wall had a profound effect on him as a young musician and the notion of telling a story over fourteen songs rather than in three or four minutes really captured his imagination and gave him the creative drive to put together concept albums himself.
Leon: It’s a really challenging process which needs real tenacity and self belief to see it through to its conclusion and it requires striking a balance between creating a cohesive theme by giving enough detail, yet at the same time leaving enough space for the listener to add their own interpretations and colours with their own imagination
Leon has spent the last five years constructing this music with long time collaborator Simon Bradshaw. The pair developed the formula of the WarmRain sound at Brad’s home studio, working on arrangements together and with Brad playing bass and keyboards, as well as recording and producing Leon’s material, before bringing in long time associates and close friends- Steve Beatty (drums and percussion) and Matt Lerwill (electric guitar, classical guitar, sitar, ukelele and mandolin) Leon describes the thinking behind WarmRain:
“Certain music needs to be allowed to evolve. During the song writing process it’s important not to rush into committing to formulating and finalising the structure too soon. By letting a composition remain in a fluid state you can investigate the different permutations that come to light and allow the music to realise it’s full potential as the best arrangement reveals itself. It’s not a case of complexity, it’s more to do with not interfering with the simple flow of energy.”
Leon: This music is intensely personal to me, I’ve been working on it for years and I’ve really put my heart and soul into it. Bringing it to life has been a dream come true. This would not have been possible on my own, I have had to entrust this most precious possession of mine into the care of others. I’ve been in many, many bands over many, many years where this has repeatedly led to disappointment and frustration, diluting energy and enthusiasm. But finally, I am part of a team of equals made up of intelligent, egoless, self motivated musicians, who study the songs we’re working through and polish and hone their individual parts, so as a unit we are able to reach our shared goal of making this music the best it can be and if that wasn’t enough!) We’re all the best of friends. I’m immensely proud of what we are achieving and it was well worth the wait.
